How Do You Remove Blank Pages in Word?

Table of Content6 Sections

An unwanted blank Word page usually comes from an empty paragraph, a manual page break, a section setting or the required paragraph after a table. Reveal the formatting marks first, then correct that specific cause. Save a copy before changing section structure so you can restore the original layout.

How Do You Reveal What is Creating the Page?

Show formatting marks

Windows: Ctrl + Shift + 8 · Mac: ⌘ + 8

In desktop Word, turn on the control on the Home tab or use the shortcut above. Go to the blank page and the end of the preceding page. Formatting marks are editing aids; they do not print.

How Do You Remove Extra Paragraphs or a Manual Page Break?

Select the empty paragraph marks that serve no purpose and press Delete. For a labeled manual page break, select the break itself and delete it. Review the text above and below afterward. An automatic page boundary caused by normal text flow cannot be deleted like a manual break; adjust the content or paragraph settings instead.

If a paragraph moves to a fresh page without a visible manual break, inspect its paragraph pagination settings. In the paragraph dialog, look under Line and Page Breaks for Page break before. Turn it off only when that heading or paragraph should not start a new page. Keep-with-next rules can also move a group of paragraphs together.

How Do You Remove a Blank Page After a Table?

  1. With formatting marks visible, select the lone paragraph mark after the final table. Do not select the table contents.
  2. Set that paragraph’s font size to 1 pt in the font-size box. If necessary, remove extra spacing before and after that paragraph.
  3. Check whether it fits back on the preceding page. If it still starts a new page, inspect its Page break before setting before changing document margins.

Worked example: a one-page invoice has a table reaching the bottom margin and Word shows an empty second page. Selecting the final ¶ and making it 1 pt can return the document to one page while retaining the invoice rows. Afterward, check that the amount-due row and footer still fit; deleting a row to hide the extra page would change the invoice.

How Do You Change a Section Break Without Losing Its Layout?

Odd- and even-page starts can intentionally insert a blank page for double-sided printing. Keep that behavior when a chapter must begin on a particular side. If the next section can begin on the same page, change its start type to Continuous instead of deleting the section boundary.

Windows desktop Word

Click in the affected section → Layout → Page Setup dialog launcher → Layout → Section start → Continuous

Word for Mac

Click in the affected section → Format → Document → Layout → Section start → Continuous

Confirm the change and inspect page orientation, headers, footers and numbering in both sections. A landscape table or a restarted page number may still require a separate section. Word for the web cannot change section-break types; open the document in desktop Word for this repair. Phone interfaces may not expose the same layout controls.

What Should You Check Before Exporting the PDF?

After correcting the Word source, export again and inspect the final page. If it remains blank, return to the formatting marks and identify the remaining cause. Word to PDF creates the PDF copy; PDF Reader lets you inspect it. Deleting the exported page alone will not correct the Word source.

When the Word source is unavailable and the blank page is genuinely unnecessary, use Delete PDF Pages on the exported file. That changes the distribution copy only. It will not repair the Word document or prevent the page from returning in the next export.
